Imagine a sci-fi version of DELIVERANCE - with that quality of drama and character - and you have ALTERED. Fifteen years ago, a group of five friends go on a hunting trip... where they are kidnaped by aliens and probed. The lucky one dies, the other four are returned to earth forever altered. Unable to escape their past, unable to forget. They carry the weight of this event in their past everywhere. One ends up in prison, one goes through a painful divorce (she takes his dog!), the others are drunks with messed up lives. After suffering for years, two of them decide the only way they can get on with their lives is to get some revenge - to capture an alien and friggin' probe it the way it probed them. But once they capture an alien, nothing goes as planned... and these men must relive the past again. If this sounds like a serious drama - it is. Yes, there are alien attacks and lots of suspense and blood and gore and chases... but there are also great big meaty dramatic scenes about men living with a horrible past.
