If your script is well written but your idea is bland, there
are enough well written scripts with good ideas for Hollywood to
buy and ruin. Since studios don't read scripts, they just read
the synopsis; they are going to greenlight the scripts with the
best ideas. Why would anyone WANT to buy a script with a bland
idea?
SERENDIPITY's idea that there is a perfect person for each of
us and fate will bring us together is an idea that speaks to a
universal human need. THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY's idea of an
adult obsessing about his high school girl to the point of
tracking her down, is a great idea. An idea that is strong enough
to sell the movie on it's own. The idea behind DUMB & DUMBER you
get from the title alone - the story is about the two stupidest
guys in the world. And isn't the idea of a shy Amish bowler
trying to become world champion funny before you've even seen the
film?
But once you have a great idea, you still have to find the
most exciting and emotionally involving way to USE that idea.
I've read dozens of awful scripts with great ideas. Many of these
scripts IGNORE their great ideas, others manage to find the most
boring story based on that idea, and some bury their idea in
silly subplots.
Guess which script they're going to buy? Those two scripts
have similar stories and may have started with the exact same
idea. Both scripts may have similar scenes and characters and
dialogue. Both lead characters are exactly the same. Both are
women who realize they are in love with a man the used to think
of as a friend - that's the core idea. So what's the difference?
One has an idea a producer can sell in a 30 second TV spot and
the other doesn't. One knows how to use it's idea and he other is
just kind of bland.
Let's look at the difference between the two scripts. Script
#2 intensifies the CONFLICT by adding another woman - the bride.
The groom is committed to a relationship! The situation in Script
#2 is more difficult than the one in Script #1. It may be
difficult to convert a long-time friend into a lover, but imagine
how much more difficult it will be if he's in a happy
relationship already? This is a BIG CONFLICT. It also intensifies
the conflict be creating a relationship between the bride and our
protagonist: she's a bridesmaid, that implies a relationship.
These aren't two women who hate each other... they like each
other! That makes it an emotional conflict. Stealing some
stranger's boyfriend is a messy and dangerous situation...
stealing a boyfriend from someone you know and like? All kinds of
emotional conflicts! If you haven't figured it out by now, your
idea NEEDS to include CONFLICT in order to work. Script #1 has a
definite conflict deficiency.
But wait - there's more! Script #2 not only has a conflict, it
has a conflict that must be resolved by a specific time. A
ticking clock. A deadline. That adds excitement. If a conflict
doesn't need to be resolved right away, it's not a pressing
problem. Hey, it can wait. That means the CONFLICT CAN BE
AVOIDED, and we never want conflicts that can be avoided!
Any
time you create a limit, you intensify the conflict. So that
impending marriage in Script #2 is a ticking clock that tells us
this script isn't going to meander - no time for that! If Julia
Roberts can't convince Dermott Mulroney to marry her instead of
Cameron Diaz by the day of the wedding she'll end up alone and
unloved! So the next thing to look for in your idea - is there
built-in deadline that the conflict must be resolved by?
SERENDIPITY also uses a wedding as a deadline - John Cusack
decides to find the woman he was meant to be with before he gets
married... and the wedding is this weekend!
As silly as the Amish bowling idea for KINGPIN is, there's a
deadline included: The bowling World Championship. From that
silly little idea we have a fish out of water protagonist who is
also an underdog, and we know he must face THE BEST BOWLERS IN
THE WORLD and win by the end of the script. It's like ROCKY -
Randy Quaid has to be strong enough to take on the champ by a
SPECIFIC TIME (that Championship in Reno).
Having a good idea is just the beginning, finding the way to
present that idea that contains the strongest conflict, emotional
conflict, a deadline, and the most interesting situation is what
really matters. A producer isn't spending $100k on your script,
they're spending $107 million on it. That's what it costs to make
the average film today. So the IDEA in that script has to be
WORTH $107 million. Have you found the most exciting way possible
