But what if it happens differently? What if no agency signs you... but you get an offer
from Roger Corman to write a low budget monster movie? Should you just write the
thing for the money? "Crap it out"? Who cares if this low budget monster movie is good
or not? The people who rent it only care about the girl taking off her top... and the
monster. You're not gong to be paid much, so you probably shouldn't put too much
work into the script, right?
Wrong.
You should always do your best work, no matter how much your paid or how little
prestige is involved with the project. If Roger Corman gives you a job writing a low
budget monster movie, you want it to be the best monster movie ever written... and one
that critics will be talking about fifty years from now - the way they talk about INVASION
OF THE BODYSNATCHERS. Even if you know the actors they hire can't act and the
director will cheese your script, you still need to do your best work. You still need to find
your "doorway" into the story so that you can write with passion... you can write from the
heart.
Let's say you're a novelist and award winning short story writer who comes to
Hollywood to write quality screenplays. Even with all of your awards, the only one that
will hire you is Roger Corman. Your assignment - write a low budget monster movie
complete with female nudity and monster attacks. Is that any job for an award winning
writer?
Sure - why not? Your script is only as good as your writing. You give it your best
shot - you pour your heart and soul into this little monster movie! You come up with
great characters, fantastic dialogue, amazing unpredictable monster attack scenes, give
the film a real sense of humor... and a social-political message. You meet the producer
halfway - he gets his monster attacks and topless babes, you get everything else. The
movie is a throw away Corman flick... but a few critics note that this is better than the
average monster movie. Some enough notice the social-political message and point out
that mainstream Hollywood movies aren't dealing as honestly with this issue as this silly
little monster movie does.
Suddenly, you have a screenwriting career. You may start
out as "that guy who writes good monster movies" but you eventually become "that guy
who writes great stuff no matter what bad idea he's handed" - what's showing through is
the quality of your writing.
That's what happened with John Sayles and PIRANHA.
Some critics praised the film as being much better than a monster movie needed to be.
Variety's print review said it was the best film ever made about the Viet Nam War... think about that for a moment!
A low budget Roger Corman monster movie is better than the other Viet Nam war movies?
Even the guys who showed up to see Heather Menzies take off her top and piranhas
munch on people thought it was better than usual - it's got lines so funny you'll use
them on your friends. Sayles followed up PIRANHA with THE HOWLING - a monster
movie about rape trauma - which also got great reviews. Eventually studio based
producers noticed that all of these good low budget movies had one thing in common -
John Sayles. Next thing you know he's doing studio rewrites on films like APOLLO 13
and writing big budget films like THE CHALLENGE... and finding the money to make his
own films.
Want to know how well PIRANHA was written? It's been remade twice (once as
a Made For Showtime movie) and a couple years ago the remake rights sold to 20th Century Fox
for high six figures... and then the remake rights were sold again for PIRANHA 3D... and now they're filming the sequel! Not bad for a low budget monster movie!
Do you think we'd know who John Sayles is today if he thought that Roger Corman
monster movies were beneath him, so he didn't pour his heart and soul into that script?
(Of course, it also takes the producer and director allowing that good work to survive, and even
understanding that this cheapo monster movie isn't just a pay check, it's either a great low budget movie that
will live on forever on whatever comes after Blue Ray and whatever we have 50 years from now... or
just some quick cash now that has no shelf life. But even if everyone else drops the ball, *you* want
to be the one who did great work.)
ALWAYS do your best work. Even if you are the only one who knows. It's not the job -
it's how well you do the job. You know what they call someone who writes a bad script?
A bad writer. Do you really want to be one of those?
Contained Thrillers like "Buried"? Serial Protagonists like "Place Beyond The Pines"? Multiple Connecting Stories like "Pulp Fiction"? Same Story Multiple Times like "Run, Lola, Run"?

GOT STRUCTURE?!
*** STRUCTURING YOUR STORY ***
William Goldman says the most important single element of any screenplay is structure. It’s the skeleton under the flesh and blood of your story. Without it, you have a spineless, formless, mess... a slug! How do you make sure your structure is strong enough to support your story? How do you prevent your story from becoming a slug? This Blue Book explores different types of popular structures from the basic three act structure to more obscure methods like leap-frogging. We also look at structure as a verb as well as a noun, and techniques for structuring your story for maximum emotional impact. Most of the other books just look at *structure* and ignore the art of *structuring* your story. Techniques to make your story a page turner... instead of a slug!

*** DESCRIPTION & VOICE ***
IS HALF OF YOUR STORY IN TROUBLE?
Most screenplays are about a 50/50 split between dialogue and description - which means your description is just as important as your dialogue. It just gets less press because the audience never sees it, the same reason why screenwriters get less press than movie stars. But your story will never get to the audience until readers and development executives read your script... so it is a very important factor. Until the movie is made the screenplay is the movie and must be just as exciting as the movie. So how do you make your screenplay exciting to read? Description is important in a novel as well, and the “audience” does read it... how do we write riveting description?
