WEDNESDAY'S SCRIPT TIP:

THREAT ESCALATION

Buy King Kong DVDs

Good screenplays depend on an escalation of threat. Things are always getting worse. We think things are really bad on page 30, but by page 50 they've become much worse, and by page 90 we're looking at the end of the world. In David Koepp's THE LOST WORLD the threat escalates from a T-Rex or two knocking over the Winnebago, to the team trapped on the island of dinosaurs, to a boat load of T-Rexes docking in San Diego and looking for a good meal. They have to kill the T-Rexes before it's too late and dinosaurs rule the earth once more.

Even in romantic comedies things are always getting worse - there is always that point where it seems impossible for the couple to end up together... things have just gone too wrong.

Stuart Beattie's COLLATERAL is a great example of threat escalation. The script is about a Cabbie (Jamie Foxx) who is hired by a Hitman (Tom Cruise) to take him to five locations in Los Angeles (for $500) in one night. For evil to flourish a good man must do nothing - and Foxx is a good man who is afraid to stand up to Cruise... and does nothing. That's our central conflict - the place where the external conflict (Cruise's hit list) meets the emotional conflict (Foxx's fear of doing anything). We can see where Foxx's fears come from in the scene with his mother in the hospital - she criticizes everything he does. This is a guy who needs to get out from under his mother's thumb. He needs to grow up, become independent, think and act on his own... but he's afraid to. When he picks up an attractive lawyer (Jada Pinkett Smith) in the opening scene and she flirts with him, he's afraid to ask for her phone number. *She's* the one who acts - giving him her business card and asking him to call her. Foxx is a guy who is afraid to do anything...

So the story puts him in a car with an assassin, and five people will die by the end of the night if he doesn't do something.

The conflict escalates when Foxx becomes more involved in the crimes. He starts out driving, then helps dispose of a body, then gets a pair of not-so-innocent bystanders killed when he goes to them for help, then lures a victim to his death (in the jazz bar), then is forced to pretent to be Vincent the Hitman (Cruise) and meet with a Crime Lord plus agree to do the last two hits. Every action pulls Foxx deeper and deeper over the line, gets him deeper in trouble, and escalates the threat. The conflict isn't stagnant, it's growing and evolving. Things continue to get worse. That's how you want your script to work. You want your conflict to grow until the protagonist has no choice but to do something. That's a great scene in COLLATERAL, when Foxx realizes that he has had the power to stop things all along - he is the driver, and his cab is his power... he floors it, racing through the dark Los Angeles streets at warp drive, attracting police... but also creating a situation where Cruise *can't* kill him without killing himself (the car will crash). Foxx realizes he has a;ways had the ability to control the situation, and finally takes action. He does something. Once he does that, we know he's probably actually call Jada Pinkett Smith at the end of the movie - and he does. But he wouldn't have found that strength unless he was pressed against the wall again and again by the escalating conflict.

Buy King Kong DVDs

I usually escalate the threat every fifteen pages. This fits the standard three act structure, and makes the script a real page turner. Every fifteen pages, things get worse. Much worse. Building both conflict and threat to a boiling point. In my HBO World Premiere movie CRASH DIVE the terrorist take over the 688 class US nuclear submarine on page 15. Concept established, I move on to escalating the threat, ratcheting up the stakes every 15 pages or so. Making things get much, much worse.

Here are the exciting scenes from Act Two of Ernest Lehman's "North By Northwest":

25:00 minutes... Kaplan hotel room search (with his mother).
30:00 minutes... Elevator ride with killers! Escape!
32:45 minutes... UN: "You're not Mr. Townsend!" (twist!)
35:00 minutes... Townsend murdered! Chase is on!
40:00 minutes... Grand Central Station... trap! Chase to train!
42:00 minutes... Eve intro, escape from cops, "7 parking tickets"
45:00 minutes... Eve/Roger dinner (she KNOWS he's wanted for murder!)
50:00 minutes... Roger hides in Eve's room, cops question her!
53:00 minutes... Love scene. Roger falls for her. Hard.
57:00 minutes... Big twist: Eve is bad guy! Working for Van Damm
58:00 minutes... Train station: Cops question Eve, Roger as redcap.
60:00 minutes... Train Station red cap search!
63:00 minutes... Eve talks to LEONARD (twist!)
65:00 minutes... Begin crop duster scene (suspense)
70:00 minutes... Crop duster ACTION! CHASE! EXPLOSION!
75:00 minutes... Roger confronts Eve... Big drama.
83:00 minutes... Roger spots Eve and Van Damm together at the Auction
87:00 minutes... Roger trapped by assassins at Auction!
90:00 minutes... Roger arrested by police at Auction.Ô
98:00 minutes... Eve is a CIA agent in deep cover (bigger twist!)
102:00 minutes... Eve KILLS Roger at Mount Rushmore (biggest twist!)

External conflict and emotional conflict are co-conspirators in story. Both must be present for a story to grow.

If the threat isn't escalating, your script has flat-lined! It's dead, Jim!

This Blue Book explores different types of popular structures from the basic three act structure to more obscure methods like leap-frogging.
